Fire Safety

Fire Safety & Preparedness
It is important you know what to do in the event of a fire in your home and are prepared for any circumstance.
Please ensure you have a fire and emergency evacuation procedure and everyone in your household is aware of this. If possible, do practice drills every 6 months to stay on top of this. If you live in a flat, make yourself and your household aware of all emergency exits in the building and only use stairs in the event of a fire.
To reduce the risk of a fire in your home you should:
- Be aware of any open flames in your home and make sure they are out when you leave the room and house. This could be flames from cooking or any lit candles.
- If you smoke, make sure cigarettes are fully put out and do not smoke in bed.
- Turn off any appliances when not in use to reduce the risk of them overheating.
- Don’t store rubbish, flammable material or any belongings in corridors or landings. This could act as fuel to the fire or could be a trip hazard when trying to exit quickly.
- Close doors overnight, especially living room and kitchen doors, to slow down and reduce the spread of fire between rooms.
- Don’t remove or damage any smoke or fire alarms. These are in place to help you keep safe and warn your household about any potential fire danger.
