Electrical Safety

Electrical safety in your home
As landlords, Advance Northumberland Homes will perform routine electrical inspections and make sure your home is free from electrical hazards. We will notify you by letter when we are planning to inspect your home. Please allow us to do this work when you have had a letter in advance.
As tenants, you have responsibility over your own electrical appliances and there are things you can do to keep your home safer:
- Do not run electrical leads, wires or plugs near water or potential leaks.
- Make sure sockets are not overloaded. If you need extension plugs, make sure they are the extended ones, rather than the block adapter as these are generally safer and will put less strain on the wall socket. An overloaded socket increases power and heat and is more likely to cause fires.
- Ensure you buy reputable electrical equipment. Cheaper equipment can have a higher risk of being faulty and may not meet the correct UK safety standards.
- Don’t DIY your wiring unless you are a trained professional. You could be electrocuted or increase the risk of overheating and fires.
