Damp and Mould

Prevent damp and mould problems becoming worse
Damp and mould is one of the most frequently reported problems in rented homes. If you experience damp or mould in your home, please report it to us so we can help fix the problem before it gets worse.
Condensation is the main cause of mould in the home. It happens when moisture in the air meets a cold surface such as a window or a wall. The condensation can soak into the walls and furniture causing damp and, over time, black mould. There are some things you can do as tenants to help prevent the build up of condensation:
- Open windows regularly and keep the trickle vents at the tops of most windows open.
- Cover pans, turn on the extractor fan or open a window while cooking
- Dry clothes in a dryer or hang up outside
- Turn on the extractor fans or open the window in the bathroom
- Leave a gap between the walls and any furniture to allow air to flow
- Close kitchen and bathroom doors when in use to stop excess moisture in the air reaching other, colder rooms.
Keeping the home at a temperature between 19℃ and 22℃ in the kitchen and living room areas should also reduce the risk of damp and mould areas building up in your home, as the condensation is more likely to evaporate.
If you have identified any damp or black mould, please report it to Advance Northumberland Homes as soon as possible. You can reach the team here 01670 528 499.
